Manpower Minister M. Hanif Dhakiri said he would limit the number of foreigners working in the country to allow businesses to employ more domestic workers.
'I'm preparing a regulation regarding the limitation of foreign workers, which would involve restrictions on foreign worker placement in several companies in Indonesia,' Hanif (see photo below, left) said in Banjarmasin, South Kalimantan, on Saturday as quoted by Antara.
Hanif said foreign workers at domestic firms needed to be regulated and controlled.
He specifically mentioned coal companies in Southern Kalimantan as companies that needed to limit the number of foreign workers they employed.
One of the conditions in the proposed regulation, added Hanif, would require all foreigners working in Indonesia to be able to speak Indonesian.
During a recent visit to South Kalimantan, he made an effort to get a sense of how many foreigners were currently working in Indonesia.
'I have received much information on the apparent increase of foreign workers in the area, both from the public and from National Awakening Party (PKB) members in South Kalimantan,' said the former PKB party executive board secretary-general.
