ix of nine foreign fishermen, caught recently by customs and excise officers in Sulawesi waters for illegal fishing, will soon be deported to their countries of origin, while the boat skipper is still undergoing a legal process in Palu, Central Sulawesi.
'The six foreign fishermen are Philippine citizens,' Bitung Maritime Resources and Fisheries Supervision Base head Pung Nugroho Saksono told the media in Palu on Thursday.
On March 18, officers from the Sulawesi-region Customs and Excise Office intercepted three Malaysian-flag vessels caught illegally fishing in the Sulawesi Sea. The three boats, believed to be carrying fish from Indonesian waters, would have unloaded their catches onto a larger vessel waiting in their country's waters.
The three foreign fishing boats weigh around 30 gross tons each. The Barakah 3 was skippered by Filipino Charlie Ibajan, the Barakah 5 by Filipino Jessie D. Casturico and the Barakah 6 by Malaysian M. Qoirul bin Salmanudin. The three skippers have been named as suspects.
