Major U
ajor U.S. stock indexes ended modestly lower on Wednesday, extending losses from the day before. Discouraging economic reports on jobs, manufacturing and construction spending weighed on the market. Oil prices soared on signs that U.S. production is slowing.
On Wednesday:
The Dow Jones industrial average lost 77.94 points, or 0.4 percent, to 17,698.18.
The S&P 500 index fell 8.20 points, or 0.4 percent, to 2,059.69.
The Nasdaq composite shed 20.66 points, or 0.4 percent, to 4,880.23.
For the week:
The Dow is down 14.48 points, or 0.1 percent.
The S&P 500 index is down 1.33 points, or 0.1 percent.
The Nasdaq is down 10.99 points, or 0.2 percent.
For the year:
The Dow is down 124.89 points, or 0.7 percent.
The S&P 500 index is up 0.79 points, or 0.04 percent.
The Nasdaq is up 144.17 points, or 3.0 percent. (***)
