he Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) will host the Asian-African Business Summit on Tuesday to seek ways to boost cooperation between the two continents.
The summit is slated to be opened by President Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo at the Jakarta Convention Center (JCC) and will feature a keynote speech from South African Vice President Cyril Ramaphosa.
Organizing committee chairman Noke Kiroyan said on Monday that Indonesia would propose the establishment of a business council that will facilitate improved business cooperation among business people from the two regions.
'We want the business council to hold a regular meeting once a year to allow intensive communication between our business people,' he said, adding that the membership of the council would be open-ended.
In terms of bilateral trade with Africa, Indonesia still lags far behind two other rising Asian economies, China and India, which last year recorded US$200 billion and $70 billion, respectively. Two-way trade between Southeast Asia's largest economy and 54 African nations stood at $10.7 billion in 2012.
