Govt team to probe unresolved gross rights abuses

The government has said that it will set up a special team to settle unresolved gross human rights abuses.

Coordinating Political, Legal and Security Affairs Minister Tedjo Edhy Purdijatno said after a meeting on Tuesday with all ministers and heads of non-departmental institutions under his remit that all ministers and officials had agreed to investigate all gross human rights abuses that remained unresolved.

Tedjo said that all ministers and officials attending the three-hour meeting were equally forcefully of the same opinion that it was necessary to reopen all unsolved cases of gross human rights abuses.

The Home Ministry, Law and Human Rights Ministry, the Attorney General'€™s Office, the National Police and the National Intelligence Agency would send representatives to join the team, he added.

'€œThe team will be set up at the instruction of the President. There will be more meetings to identify all gross human rights abuses to be resolved and to discuss how they will be settled,'€ he said, though he declined to name any of the cases that the team would look into. (rms)(+++)
