Economy in brief: Foreign companies told to pay tax

T

he Finance Ministry'€™s directorate of taxation met on Wednesday with scores of multinational corporations (MNCs) to demand that they comply with the prevailing tax regulations.

'€œThe directorate general has requested that MNCs operating in Indonesia pay their tax obligations in line with prevailing regulations and refrain from evading taxes,'€ said the directorate'€™s spokesman, Mekar Satria Utama, in a statement.

According to the directorate, taxes paid by MNCs accounted for 25 percent of the country'€™s state revenues last year.'€œ But a number of MNCs use schemes to evade taxes that cause losses to the host country,'€ she said.

'€œThe director general of taxation has called on foreign taxpayers to act as role models in tax compliance.'€
