AKASSAR: Archeologists at the Makassar Archeological Center in South Sulawesi have discovered a skull believed to be that of a prehistoric human, during a 10-day study in Bone regency from April 13 to 23.
The skull was found in the Bala Metti Cave in Pattuku village, Bontocani district, Bone.
The find was the first in the once inhabited cave. 'The finding is expected to provide answers to questions sought by researchers, who were the humans living in the caves and where did they come from?' said team leader Budianto Hakim on Friday.
Budianto added that the skull had yet to be moved due to the lack of proper tools and the fact the research was limited to only 10 days. The research is expected to be resumed in May, when the skull will be exhumed.
Although the skull has not yet been moved and analyzed, Budianto said he believed the skull was of an Austroloid person hailing from Australia and thought to have arrived in the archipelago 60,000 years ago.
