uthorities at Wijayapura port, which serves as a crossing terminal for the Nusakambangan prison island near Cilacap in Central Java, have imposed tighter security rules ahead of the executions of 10 death row inmates on the island.
Other than visitors to the island's correctional facilities, no one, not even local people, may now enter the dock's ferry terminal.
'You shouldn't stay here too long, otherwise you will be reprimanded by security guards. We, the local residents, are temporarily not allowed to enter the port area,' Sutikno, 56, a local resident, told journalists, as quoted by kompas.com on Sunday.
Despite tighter visiting rules imposed by the port authorities, police personnel have not yet beefed up security ahead of the second batch of executions conducted under President Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo's administration.
The 10 condemned criminals are all already in Nusakambangan, in isolation cells in several prisons on the island. Mary Jane Fiesta Veloso was the last of the group to be transferred to Nusakambangan when was moved from Wirogunan Penitentiary in Yogyakarta on Friday. She is currently in an isolation room in Besi prison, as are three other death row convicts, including two Australians. (ebf)
