number of international migrant workers have staged a protest at Wijayapura port in Nusakambangan, Central Java, to express their solidarity for Filippina death-row inmate Mary Jane Veloso, who, along with nine other drug convicts, is to be executed within the next few days.
Protesters marched to the port carrying banners reading 'Mr. President Joko Widodo, do the right thing and save Filipina Mary Jane Fiesta Veloso and Indonesian migrant workers overseas from the death penalty' and 'Life is a human right. Reject the death penalty. Save Mary Jane and protect migrant workers'.
Connie Bragas-Regalado, a migrant worker from the Philippines,
called on the Indonesian government to cancel the execution and allow Veloso to rejoin her family in the Philippines.
'We call on the Indonesian people, the Philippine community and our government to work harder to save Veloso,' she said.
Connie, also coordinator of the Philippine Migrant Workers group, said Veloso was a mother of two children who still needed their mother's full attention.
Another protester, Minerva F Lopes, said she and Veloso's lawyer team would submit an official request for a second review of the Veloso case as a last-ditch attempt to save her from execution.
Iweng Kartiwen, an activist with the Indonesian Migrant Worker Network (JBMI) called on the President to review the decision on the execution, since Veloso could still file for a second review of her case.
'We believe she is a victim of human trafficking because when she left Manila, she was promised a job as a domestic helper in Malaysia. She already paid 7,000 pesos for the recruitment fee, handing over her motorcycle and cellular phone,' Iweng said as quoted by Antara news agency. (rms)(++++)
