Police look to save Rp 60b from recruitment improvement

ational Police chief Gen. Badrodin Haiti has said he is committed to fixing the recruitment process for police personnel in a bid to slash the budget and create a more professional police force.
'With new police recruitment policies, we will cut the budget by up to Rp 60 billion [US$4.62 million],' said Badrodin as quoted by kompas.com on Sunday.
He added that under the new recruitment policies, the police would save energy and time as well.
According to the new policies, the National Police will open their recruitment period shortly after the completion of national exams (UN) for senior high school students.
'This will allow us to get applicants straight from high school,' Badrodin said.
He went on to say that unlike in previous years, the National Police would apply a 'pick-up the ball' policy, which would see proactive recruitment drives in schools.
'Those who are interested can even get direct counselling or assistance from us, if necessary. As such, the police will know better which students have high potential and which are incapable. We will know their strengths and weaknesses,' said Badrodin.
'In the previous recruitment periods, we didn't know their backgrounds to see whether they were suitable candidates,' he said.
Badrodin further explained that recruitment of officers (Perwira) and enlisted officers (Tamtama) would be conducted in one selection period.
The National Police, he said, would also provide scholarships for police academy graduates with good foreign language skills to study abroad. During their studies, the police officers would still get rank promotions in line with existing regulations, he added.
'I want to convey to police officer candidates that being a police officer is a noble duty. Our society still needs us, regardless of any accusations we have received of late. For the sake of everyone interested in becoming a police officer, let's improve this institution,' said Badrodin. (ebf)
