n international law expert with the University of Indonesia, Hikmahanto Juwana, has said Indonesia's planned executions of foreign death row inmates will not have an impact on its relations with other countries as adhering to its laws is a sovereign matter for every country.
"Of course, there will be protests at the execution and it's normal. However, relations between countries cannot be avoided as they need each other," he said as quoted by tempo.co on Sunday.
Citing an example, Hikmahanto said the Dutch government had withdrawn its ambassador from Indonesia following the execution of Ang Kiem Soei in January. Up to this point, however, relations between Indonesia and the Netherlands had continued to run well.
"The Dutch ambassador has even returned to Indonesia," he said. (ebf)(++++)
