URAKARTA: Dozens of disaster mitigation delegates from ASEAN countries took part in a comparable study at the Indonesian Red Cross (PMI) in Surakarta, Central Java, on Thursday, to study the PMI's role in disaster management.
According to delegate chief Saroj Srisai from the ASEAN Coordinating Center for Humanitarian Assistance on Disaster Management (AHA Center), they were required to learn about health care and alertness in facing and handling disasters.
'We've seen the Surakarta PMI play a better role as it does not only handle the blood transfusion unit but also treats the elderly, homeless and mentally distressed. This is remarkable,' said Srisai.
PMI Surakarta secretary Sumartono Hadinoto said the visit by delegates to PMI Surakarta had been referred by the organization's central board, as it had complete humanitarian programs.
'Unlike PMI branches in other cities, PMI Surakarta also provides various social services, such as a disaster response unit, an ambulance service and a blood dialysis clinic, besides blood transfusion,' said Sumartono.
