ice President Jusuf Kalla said on Monday that the government would start exempting Japanese citizens from the need to obtain visitor visas as early as June as an effort to increase foreign tourist arrivals.
Kalla conveyed the pledge during a meeting with Japan-Indonesia Parliamentary League chairman Toshihiro Nikai.
"They've demanded we immediately realize our plan to provide the visa-free facility as they've argued that Indonesian citizens traveling to Japan would no longer need visas," said Kalla.
"I've promised them that we will start giving them the facility in June."
Indonesia plans to exempt visas for an additional of 30 countries to help meet its ambitious target of luring more than 10 million foreign tourist arrivals this year. However, according to the current immigration law, visa exemptions should only be granted on a reciprocal basis. (ren)(+++)
