he Law and Human Rights Ministry is stepping up security on Nusakambangan Island, off Cilacap in Central Java, in response to a threat of an attack by a radical group to free terrorist convict Abu Bakar Ba'asyir.
'Rumors are spreading that the IS (Islamic State organization) is preparing an assault to free Abu Bakar Ba'asyir. In the eastern and western part of the island, there are illegal residents who have yet to be identified and they have frequently organized training and held mass prayers. Some of them live in an area located some 700 meters from a prison accommodating a notorious terrorist,' former director general of correctional institutions Handoyo Sudradjat said after transferring his job to successor Ma'mun in a ceremony here on Tuesday.
Handoyo resigned reportedly because his concept on correctional institutions had not been adopted by the Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo administration.
'Besides, executions of death row convicts have been conducted on the island,' he said as quoted by Antara news agency.
He said the military and the government had agreed to step up security and relocate the squatters from the island because 84 terrorists were serving time in various prisons on the island.
Previously, a video uploaded to YouTube featured an armed masked man threatening to assault Nusakembangan to free Ba'asyir. (rms)(+++)
