T

ransportation Minister Ignasius Jonan on Wednesday inaugurated the first short-sea shipping route in Indonesia, from Lampung to Surabaya, East Java. The route will be plied by the KMP Mutiara Persada.

The ship departed from Pelabuhan Panjang port in Lampung on Wednesday and will dock at Tanjung Perak port in Surabaya on Friday afternoon.

'€œThis is a great improvement for sea transportation to compete with land, air and railway transportation,'€ Minister Jonan said in Lampung on Wednesday as quoted by Tempo.co.

Usually, sea transportation from Lampung to Surabaya takes 100 hours.

KMP Mutiara Persada, which is owned by PT Athosin Lampung Pelayaran (ALP), has a 15,000 gross tonnage and can accommodate 200 vehicles, from cars to trailer trucks. The ship can accommodate 500 passengers.

PT ALP director Ryan Bernandus said that the fare for the short-sea shipping was relatively inexpensive, at Rp 350,000 (US$31) and Rp 500,000 for foot passengers travelling economy class and business class, respectively. Meanwhile, cars and small trucks will be charged Rp 3.5 million, and large trucks Rp 10 million. (naf)(+++)
