The national social security programs are compulsory for all expatriates working in Indonesia, an official has warned.
President director of the Workers' Social Security Management Agency (BPJS TK) said that all expatriates working in Indonesia had to be registered both with the Healthcare Management Agency (BPJS Kesehatan) and BPJS TK six months after their employment in the country began.
'According to Law No. 40/2004 on the national social security system, all workers, including expatriates, working in the country have the right to social security protection. Expatriates, including foreign investors must be registered with the Healthcare Management Agency and the BPJS TK,' he told The Jakarta Post on Monday.
Elvyn said the national social security system was based on the principles of cooperation, solidarity, equal treatment and universalism and the principles made no separation or discrimination against expatriates.
'The social security programs are also part of the tax paid by workers, including expatriates, to the state,' he said, adding that the expatriates' payroll was separate from the tax they paid monthly under the transfer of knowledge program.
According to data at the Manpower Ministry, the number of expatriates working in the country in 2014 was 64,800, down from 68,900 in 2013 and 72,800 in 2012.(+++)
