Jokowi extends logging moratorium on peatland

P

resident Joko '€œJokowi'€ Widodo confirmed that he had signed the extension of Presidential Instruction (Inpres) No. 6/2011 on the logging moratorium that expired on Wednesday.

The Inpres issued on May 13, 2011, stipulates that the government will not issue new logging permits in the remaining forests and peatland nationwide. Regional heads are also prohibited from issuing new permits for logging and the conversion of forest areas into plantations.

'€œThe presidential instruction has been extended today,'€ Antara news agency quoted him as saying after officiating an Army hospital in Pinangranti, East Jakarta.

The President said the Inpres'€™ extension was aimed at conserving the remaining forests. (rms)(++++)
