he Medan Police are pursuing the instigator of a recent rally against the repossession of land in Register 40 at the North Sumatra governor's office in Medan, which turned violent.
Police said they had named 18 protesters caught in the rally as suspects who are currently being held at Medan Police headquarters.
Medan Police crimes and intelligence unit chief Comr. Aldi Subartono said suspects were still being questioned by police.
Aldi added that based upon a preliminary investigation, the protesters were strongly believed to have been paid for their actions.
'We are still pursuing the [main] actor. We hope to catch him in the near future,' said Aldi on Thursday.
Hundreds of protesters clashed with police and public order officers in a rally in protest of the May 11 repossession of a 47,000-hectare plot of deforested land in Register 40, Padang Lawas.
More than 6,000 people live in the once forested area, which has now been converted into a oil palm plantation.
