Bangladeshis among Rohingya displaced: Volunteer

S

ome undocumented migrants that were previously reported to the Lhokseumawe Immigration Office in North Aceh as from the Rohingya ethnic group and were stranded in the regency'€™s coastal areas, are in fact Bangladeshi migrants, a humanitarian worker has said.

'€œWe received information last night that some of the boat people stranded are not Rohingya [asylum seekers] but are from Bangladesh,'€ Hilal Merah (Red Crescent) volunteer Hilmi Bakar said as quoted by Antara news agency on Sunday.

He said his humanitarian agency was verifying data on those migrants that were not Rohingya. Those from Bangladesh will be separated from the Rohingya migrants and would be given to the Immigration Office.

Hilmi said the Immigration Office would likely deport the Bangladeshis, who were attempting to reach a third country by using the same boats as the Rohingya.

Since last Monday, the North Aceh authorities have helped 583 displaced people, who are mostly males.

Hilmi said there were still around 25,000 Rohingya adrift at sea.

He added that Malaysia and Thailand had refused to accommodate Bangladeshi and Rohingya migrants, leading to some of them being stranded in waters off the coast of North Aceh and Langsa (East Aceh).

According to Hilmi, the migrants have been accommodated and given humanitarian assistance from both the North Aceh administration and local communities.

Local communities in Aceh have called on the government to accommodate the migrants. (ebf)(+++)
