here are various things parents can do to shift their children's attention from their gadgets, including simple activities together an expert has said.
Psychologist Rahmaniar Pujiastuti said that the activities did not have to be expensive, 'when children can have quality time with their parents, they can read books together, play Japanese origami, or draw together. The children can also go on courses of their interest,' Rahmaniar told The Jakarta Post on the sidelines of a seminar on Wednesday.
She also said children should not just be restricted to accessing gadgets without a child-friendly explanation based on real-life cases, as mere one-sided restrictions might prompt the children to sneak behind their parents to access the gadget.
'We also have to be a good role model. We can't explain to them about not using gadgets excessively if we still use our own gadgets for 24 hours,' she said.
The rate of Indonesian children's attachment to gadgets has reached a worrying level as 55.2 percent of 2,558 children from 25 provinces spent more than two hours every day in front of a TV, a computer or a gadget, based on a study by Southeast Asian Nutrition Survey in 2011. (fsu) (++++)
