he National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM) is conducting an investigation into the planned construction of a new airport in Kulon Progo regency, Central Java.
The project is believed to have violated basic human rights, especially those of farm owners and those seeking a living in coastal farming, who likely face eviction due to the project.
'The rights of people to information, especially regarding the negative impacts of the project, have not been fulfilled. As a result, the residents are living in prolonged uncertainty and unrest,' Komnas HAM member Dianto Bachriadi told The Jakarta Post on Thursday.
Dianto, accompanied by two other Komnas HAM members, is conducting an investigation into Kulon Progo as a follow up to complaints by farmers on March 23.
The planned airport project will cover 645 hectares of productive farmland along coastal areas, spanning six villages.
