Trade Minister Rachmat Gobel says that the government will monitor markets to prevent the circulation of synthetic rice.
'We have to control the products that enter our market. So the traders must be responsible for the goods they sell. They have to be aware of where their products come from,' Gobel said on Sunday as quoted by Antara news agency.
Gobel was speaking after an Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) meeting in Boracay, the Philippines.
He said the government would also regulate imported goods.
'We must respond to this situation wisely. Managements of traditional markets must be re-evaluated so that we can identify the suppliers and producers of imported goods,' he added.
Gobel discussed the synthetic rice being sold on the Indonesian market with Chinese Trade Deputy Minister Wang Shouwen. Synthetic rice, which contains traces of plastic, is believed to be produced in China.
During the meeting, Wang said that China would help Indonesia handle the issue. He added that the Chinese government had only granted one state-owned company permission to export rice, which would make it easier to detect the distribution of synthetic rice. (dyl/nvn)
