he Foreign Ministry is drafting a presidential regulation on refugees to follow up on a tripartite agreement between Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand to provide shelter for 7,000 Myanmarese and Bangladeshi refugees in the country.
The director of international and disarmament affairs at the Foreign Ministry, Andi Rachmianto, said here on Monday that his side was drafting a presidential regulation and would expedite the drafting so that it could be signed by the President soon.
'The draft regulation will be submitted immediately to the Law and Human Rights Affairs Ministry to make it congruent [with other regulations],' he said as quoted by kompas.com.
According to Andi, a presidential regulation was necessary so that food and shelter could be provided to the refugees as agreed by the three countries.
Indonesia and Malaysia agreed to provide shelter and humanitarian aid to the refugees under the condition that refugees would be either repatriated or resettled by the international community within one year to third countries. (rms)
