resident Joko "Jokowi" Widodo's ambitious world maritime axis plan risked failure without a sound land transportation scheme, a transportation executive said on Thursday.
'People who use sea or air transportation will still need land transportation in the end. When the goods reach the ports, they need adequate land transportation to reach their final destination in a warehouse or factory," said Adrianto, general council advisor of the Jakarta chapter of the Organization of Land Transportation Owners (Organda).
"It will be a problem if this part is not developed properly.'
Adrianto, who is also director of taxi operator PT Blue Bird, said that the government should also strive to lower the logistics costs of land transportation. High costs were usually caused by inadequate infrastructure in remote areas where the products, especially food, originated, he added.
'It's easier to move products in cities than in remote areas because of a lack of highways and fuel stations," he said.
"That's why we need to cooperate with the government on transportation in remote areas to lower the cost.'
Logistics costs account for 24.6 percent of Indonesia's gross domestic product (GDP), among the highest in the region, according to data from the World Bank. (fsu/nvn)(+++)
