National scene: Haj cost significantly down: Jokowi

P

resident Joko '€œJokowi'€ Widodo announced on Wednesday that the government had reduced the cost of going on the haj this year from US$3,219 to $2,717, a reduction of $502.

Jokowi said in a press conference that the cost reduction would not affect the quality of services provided for pilgrims.

He said the government had managed to reduce the cost after introducing cost-cutting measures, including making land and air transportation more efficient as well as establishing centralized housing for pilgrims.

'€œThis efficiency program does not reduce the quality of service provided. In fact, the quality should improve,'€ Jokowi said.

The House earlier said the average cost of going on the haj in 2015 would be US$2,634 (Rp 33.9 million) per person, lower than last year'€™s cost of $3,218.
