resident Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo announced on Wednesday that the government had reduced the cost of going on the haj this year from US$3,219 to $2,717, a reduction of $502.
Jokowi said in a press conference that the cost reduction would not affect the quality of services provided for pilgrims.
He said the government had managed to reduce the cost after introducing cost-cutting measures, including making land and air transportation more efficient as well as establishing centralized housing for pilgrims.
'This efficiency program does not reduce the quality of service provided. In fact, the quality should improve,' Jokowi said.
The House earlier said the average cost of going on the haj in 2015 would be US$2,634 (Rp 33.9 million) per person, lower than last year's cost of $3,218.
