Novel demands internal police audit

A

top investigator at the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK), Novel Baswedan, demanded Friday the National Police'€™s detective division conduct an internal audit on the police investigators handling his case.

The demand was read out during the first pretrial hearing at the South Jakarta District Court against the National Police for their alleged misconduct during Novel'€™s arrest and detention on May 1.

'€œWe order the defendant [the National Police] to conduct an audit of the performance of the investigators responsible for Novel Baswedan'€™s case,'€ one of Novel'€™s lawyers, Muji Kartika Rahayu, told the judge during the hearing.

Muji also said that Novel and his team of lawyers demanded that the police force declare Novel'€™s arrest and detention invalid as it was allegedly based on a warrant dated April 24.

Furthermore, the National Police should publicly apologize to Novel by placing a 3x6 meter banner in front of the National Police headquarters in South Jakarta with the statement '€œThe National Police apologizes to Novel Baswedan and his family in relation to his invalid arrest and detention.'€

Novel was arrested a little after midnight on May 1 for allegedly beating a suspect to death during his tenure as the chief detective of the Bengkulu Police. Although he was eventually released due to a deal made between the police force and the KPK, Novel had been flown to Bengkulu to partake in a reenactment of the crime but he refused as he was not allowed to be accompanied by a lawyer of his choosing.
