he police have expressed optimism that the South Jakarta District Court will dismiss the pretrial petition filed by Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) investigator Novel Baswedan.
'The arrest [of Novel Baswedan] by investigators was line with procedure. The investigators exercised discretion,' Julbaner Toendan, a member of the police's legal team in the case, was quoted as saying by tribunnews.com on Friday.
The has court started hearing the pretrial petition, which Novel filed against the police's move to name him a suspect in connection with the alleged torture of a bird's nest thief during police interigation in Bengkulu in 2004. He is also demanding that the police apologize for his arrest through a banner installed in a strategic area.
Novel was arrested at midnight on May 1, but was later released following intensive lobbying by KPK leaders.
He filed the pretrial petition because the police's arrest warrant had expired and he had been cooperative with the police in their investigation into the case. (rms)(++++)
