Police optimistic court will dismisss Novel'€™s petition

T

he police have expressed optimism that the South Jakarta District Court will dismiss the pretrial petition filed by Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) investigator Novel Baswedan.

'€œThe arrest [of Novel Baswedan] by investigators was line with procedure. The investigators exercised discretion,'€ Julbaner Toendan, a member of the police'€™s legal team in the case, was quoted as saying by tribunnews.com on Friday.

The has court started hearing the pretrial petition, which Novel filed against the police'€™s move to name him a suspect in connection with the alleged torture of a bird'€™s nest thief during police interigation in Bengkulu in 2004. He is also demanding that the police apologize for his arrest through a banner installed in a strategic area.

Novel was arrested at midnight on May 1, but was later released following intensive lobbying by KPK leaders.

He filed the pretrial petition because the police'€™s arrest warrant had expired and he had been cooperative with the police in their investigation into the case. (rms)(++++)
