n its 48th anniversary, the Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI) is set to hold its annual science congress and expo to tackle the country's strategic problems ahead of the advent of the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC).
'Indonesian scientists should be able to compete with other countries ahead of the AEC,' said LIPI secretary Siti Nuramaliati Prijono in an official statement on Friday.
The eleventh National Science Congress (KIPNAS), slated to be held from Oct. 8 to 9 at LIPI's headquarters, will gather scientists to produce a strategic plan on a wide range of issues Indonesia faces, from maritime affairs to social development, social welfare and health.
The event will be held in cooperation with the Research and Technology and Higher Education Ministry.
Meanwhile, the Indonesia Science Expo, which will be held from Oct. 8 to 11 at the same place, will showcase the latest development in research and technological advancement from LIPI and other institutions.
LIPI will also award the Sarwono Award this year for the recognition of the contribution of a chosen Indonesian science figure and the Young Scientist Award for emerging scientists.
The institute recently worked with the Research and Technology and Higher Education Ministry and a private cattle-breeder on an artificial-insemination program for cattle in an attempt to boost cattle-breeding technology. (fsu)(+++)
