ormer Democratic Party chairman Anas Urbaningrum has blasted a Supreme Court ruling that handed down a harsher punishment for him, saying that members of the panel of judges who heard his case had blood on their hands.
'We thought that the judges could right the wrong; turns out that they have brought injustice to a whole new level,' Anas' lawyer Handika Honggo Wongso said as quoted by tribunnews.com.
The panel of judges at the court, which consisted of Artidjo Alkostar and justices MS Lumme and Krisna Harahap, decided to reject Anas' cassation plea because the court deemed that he was convincingly guilty of corruption and money laundering, and increased his eight-year prison sentence to 14 years as well as stripping the politician of the right to run for office as soon as he finished serving time.
In September 2014, the Jakarta Corruption Court sentenced Anas to eight years behind bars and demanded he make restitution payments of Rp 57.5 billion and US$5.2 million after finding him guilty of corruption and money laundering.
The sentence was less than half of the 15-year prison term sought by Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) prosecutors.
