Infrastructure development to be accelerated on Sebatik

Frontier: An Indonesian border post in Nunukan, North Kalimantan (ANTARA/M Rusman)

The government will speed up development of infrastructure projects on the frontier Sebatik Island in Nunukan, North Kalimantan, according to Coordinating Minister for Political Affairs, Security and Law, Tedjo Edhy Purdjianto.

The government has set aside Rp 1.4 trillion (US$104.97 million) from the state budget for the development of the infrastructure projects, ranging from roads to ports, as well as ships, market centers and school buildings, on Sebatik this year, Tedjo said here on Sunday.

"The funds of Rp1.4 trillion will soon be disbursed to build a number of infrastructure projects for Sebatik alone," Tedjo said as quoted by Antara news agency.

He said the ministry of public works and housing would also spend more funds for public works projects in the border area in the regency of Nunukan.

The projects are part of a program pledged earlier by President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo to modernize underdeveloped areas in North Kalimantan.

He said development of the facilities was expected to help improve the welfare of the people and reduce dependence on other countries for domestic requirements. (hhr/dmr)
