Police interrogate Engeline'€™s suspected murderer over Rp2b payment

enpasar Police investigators are interrogating Agustinus '€œAgus'€ Tai Hamdamai, the suspected murderer of Engeline, an 8-year-old girl from Denpasar, Bali, over his reported statement that he was promised a Rp 2 billion (US$150,000) payment for killing the elementary school child.

'€œWe are investigating Agus to see whether he could give us the same information he has conveyed to a House of Representatives member,'€ said Bali Police chief Insp. Gen.Ronny Sompie as quoted by Antara on Sunday.

On Saturday, a member of the House'€™s Commission III overseeing legal affairs, Akbar Faisal, visited the Denpasar Police headquarters to learn the latest developments from its investigation into Engeline'€™s murder case. The NasDem Party politician also visited the police'€™s detention facility where Agus was being held.

Akbar said Agus told him he was promised Rp 2 billion if he could kill Engeline, who was living with her adoptive mother Margriet Megawe in a house on Jl. Sedap Malam in Denpasar.

'€œTherefore, we have continued to investigate him [Agus],'€ said Ronny.

The suspect, who was formerly a domestic worker at Margriet'€™s house, is still being detained at the Denpasar Police headquarters for further investigation.

Agus'€™s lawyer, Haposan Sihombing, who was appointed by the Denpasar Police, said the 25-year-old man from East Sumba, East Nusa Tenggara, had not yet told him much.

'€œHe only answered my questions a little. He did not speak too much. Whether this was because I was a police-appointed lawyer so he did not want to be too open, we don'€™t know,'€ said Haposan.

The Bali Police have named Engeline'€™s adoptive mother, Margriet, as a suspect for allegedly abandoning her child, not for any possible involvement in Engeline'€™s murder.

The police said, however, it was possible that the results of her interrogation could link her to Engeline'€™s murder case.(ebf)
