he National Commission on Violence Against Women (Komnas Perempuan) has called on Home Minister Tjahjo Kumolo to annul three official orders that were found to be discriminatory and had the potential to trigger violence against women in the province.
According to the commission, Mayoral Instruction No. 1/2015 on a curfew for women, which was later revised in Mayoral Instruction No. 2/2015 on the supervision of recreation centers, entertainment centers, Internet stalls and cafes and Gubernatorial Instruction No 2/2014 on supervision of Internet stalls in Aceh have to be revoked not only because they were against Law No. 23/2014 on regional administration, but mainly because they have limited women's rights to express themselves, to work and to have mobility.
'The three instructions have limited alternatives for women to play their role in the public space,' the commission said in a press release here on Friday.
It said the paradigm that was used as a fundamental reason for issuing the instructions would shape public opinion and culture to imply that women playing their role in public space at nights had no morality and violated the law.
According to the commission, Banda Aceh Mayor Illiza Sa'aduddin Djamal did not understand the protection of women and substantive equality for women when she said the instruction was aimed at protecting women.
It also stood behind Vice President Jusuf Kalla who recently called on the Aceh provincial government and the Banda Aceh mayor to revise the three flawed instructions. (rms)(+++)
