fter being hunted down and snuffed out in Jakarta, Uber taxis have become the targets of a similar operation by the local transportation agency in Bandung, West Java.
Bandung transportation agency said on Tuesday that they would seize Uber taxis in the region for failing to provide the required permits for public transportation in Bandung.
'If they don't have the permit that means they are illegal,' the agency's head, Ricky Gustiadi, said as quoted by tribunnews.com.
The agency's operation followed complaints by local taxi operators, who consider Uber operations a serious threat to the viability of their own companies.
Separately, Gatot Indra, representative for the top taxi operator in Bandung, Blue Bird Bandung, said that Uber operations with mobile apps and rental cars had threatened local taxi operators by offering lower rates.
'There is a standard charge for the operation of taximeters but Uber taxis do not have it,' he said.
The agency's operation will go ahead despite the Bandung administration's plan to investigate further the existence of the San Francisco-based transportation franchise in the city. (++++)
