or the current online school application, which started June 20, 2015, warnet (internet cafe) owners in Batam, Riau Islands, received a windfall as students' parents, who are technology-illiterate, asked them to help check to see if their children's names were on the list of new students.
As was seen at Jodoh Net at Tiban housing complex, for example, a housewife asked Romi, 20, the owner of the warnet, to check the name of her child applying to enter the local state junior high school.
"Mas, please help me check online the names of students, it is said it can be done here," said the housewife identified as Nana, who admitted she was not familiar with internet or smartphones.
As she was curious about the fate of her child intending to enter school and she was forced to go to the warnet several times to check it.
"My child's grades are excellent," Nana said upon seeing her child's position at the top of the list of students to be accepted to the school.
For Romi, such a situation is not new because since the online application system was implemented, many parents asked for his help to follow the acceptance process of their children.
"Under the new system parents are asked to register at the school as usual and are later asked to check the website to see whether their children were on the list. We charge them Rp 2,000 for 10 minutes," he said, adding that the application could be accessed and monitored through http://batam.siap-ppdb.com/.
Online student acceptance was introduced by the Batam City education office after being improved this year. At least 220 operators have been prepared, namely 103 for elementary schools, 66 for junior high schools and 22 for senior high schools and another 14 for vocational schools.
Batam Deputy Mayor Rudi said that the introduction of the online registration system was intended to prevent disputes. "Disputes frequently broke out during the school entrance period. The online system is expected to prevent such problems from arising again," he said. (hhr)(+++)
