The Jakarta administration plans to employ beggars with Jakarta IDs at its subdistrict offices, an official says.
The latest data from the city's social agency shows that it arrested around 4,000 beggars in Jakarta during raids from January to June. They are currently attending classes in the Bina Insan social center in East Jakarta to develop their skills.

Give a man fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man how to fish and you feed him for a life time.

When dealing with homo-sapiens, success depends on the man concerned. Almost all will start to fish but most, after a few times not getting fish, will revert to asking for fish. I've seen this so often in my work environment: People who are long on ambition but short on the persistence to learn and work on themselves.

I like this respectful approach. Help them help themselves. Other governors would just have loaded them on trucks to Central Java.
Nobody is forced to work there, for sure. And the conditions are usually really good. I think it is more that the city is helping them to find proper work.

It is good to work, it brings dignity to a beggar.
