House tells govt to submit rejection on KPK law revision

T

he House of Representatives told the government on Thursday to formally submit its rejection on the 2002 Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) Law revision to the parliament before it could be processed further.

House of Representatives commission III overseeing legal affairs deputy head Desmond Mahesa said that if the government wanted the law to be withdrawn from the National Legislation Program (Prolegnas), it must formally lodge their rejection straight to the House beforehand.

The Gerindra party lawmaker stated that the cancellation of the inclusion of the law into Prolegnas'€™s priority bill list would then be discussed in a meeting between the government and the House.

Desmond said that the government'€™s stance on the law had been confusing, considering that it was the Law and Human Rights Minister Yasonna H Laoly that wanted the revision to be included on the priority bills list.

'€œIn order to pull the revision out from the list, the government must convey its rejection to the House, which will then be discussed at a House plenary meeting. If it gains a majority in the House, then it could be pulled. It won'€™t get pulled out just because the President says so, it has to go through a procedure first,'€ he told reporters at the House complex on Thursday.

Another way to reject the revision, according Desmond, involves the issuance of a presidential decree but it will require coordination between the president and the related ministries.

'€œYou must remember that the House currently has no draft of the revision. It'€™s all still a plan at the moment. But it must be clear nonetheless, especially between the president and his ministers,'€ Desmond remarked. (ika)(+++)
