A committee tasked with selecting Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) commissioners announced on Saturday that 194 candidates could move to the next round of the selection process after passing administrative tests.

The 194 candidates '€” comprising 23 women and 171 men '€” were selected from more than 600 applicants who submitted their credentials by Friday.

'€œMost of those [who passed the first stage] are either lawyers or consultants,'€ selection team chairman Destry Damayanti said, adding that 46 candidates came from the two backgrounds.

Among the well-known figures who passed the first round are former Constitutional Court chief justice Jimly Asshidiqie, Judicial Commission (KY) commissioner Imam Anshori Saleh, United Development Party (PPP) politician Ahmad Yani, Papua Police chief Insp. Gen. Yotje Mende and KPK acting commissioner Johan Budi.

A large proportion of candidates who moved to the second round also had a background in academia, with 28 working as university lecturers.

Others are now members of law enforcement agencies, including 23 who serve in the National Police or at the Attorney General'€™s Office. Four candidates are currently officials with the KPK.

'€œUp to 46 percent of the candidates hold a Master'€™s degree while there were also a few who held a doctoral degree, around 24.8 percent. The remaining candidates all have undergraduate degrees,'€ Destry said.

The selection team, which was established by President Joko '€œJokowi'€ Widodo in May, will select five new commissioners from the 194 candidates to replace current KPK leaders whose tenures end in December.

The team will propose eight final candidates to the President, who will submit the names of those selected to the House of Representatives for screening later this year.

The eight will join two candidates picked by a selection team set up by then president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono: former KPK commissioner Busyro Muqoddas and Cabinet Secretariat international relations division head Robby Arya.

Destry said that the committee would soon upload the list of selected candidates on setneg.go.id for the public to scrutinize until Aug. 3.

'€œWe are inviting the public to comment on the candidates in order for us to have a better KPK,'€ she said.

Transparency International Indonesia (TII) and Indonesia Corruption Watch (ICW) both said recently that they, along with other NGOs, would participate in independent background checks.

Meanwhile, one of the candidates, Sugianto, a sharia lecturer at the State Islamic University in Cirebon, said he was ready to go through the selection process after having failed to be selected as a Constitutional Court justice several times.

'€œMy experience of having gone through the selection process at the House of Representatives as a Constitutional Court justice candidate is proof that I am ready to fight to become a KPK leader,'€ he told The Jakarta Post.

KY commissioner Imam also expressed his enthusiasm for the selection process and said he was glad that many well-known and competent people made the list.

However, Imam, whose tenure at the KY will expire in December, acknowledged that he would have to work hard for his candidacy.

'€œWhether I like it or not, I'€™ll have to review the different types of corruption that occur in Indonesia and around the world because we don'€™t really know what the committee is looking for,'€ he told the Post.
