everal flights serving domestic and international routes were unable to land safely due to thick volcanic ash at Ngurai Rai International Airport, Bali, on Sunday, forcing several of them to return to their airports of origin, an airport official has said.
Citing information from the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the general manager of state-owned airport operator Angkasa Pura (AP) I at Ngurah Rai airport, Trikora Harjo, said volcanic ash from Mount Raung's eruptions had fallen on Bali again, disrupting the airport's flight schedules.
"Six planes were unable to land in Bali while several other flights were forced to turn back to their original airports after we informed them that the airport was closed again," said Trikora as quoted by Antara on Sunday.
He was speaking to journalists at the airport's departure terminal in Kuta, Badung regency, Bali.
A Cathay Pacific flight from Hong Kong had to turn back to Singapore while Garuda Indonesia flights departing from Jakarta and Surabaya returned to their points of departure.
Trikora said six flights that were ready to take off from Ngurah Rai were also forced to turn back to the apron.
Hundreds of passengers were discharged from the aircraft. Some passengers decided to wait at the airport while others chose to return to their hotels, waiting for further developments of their flight schedules. (ebf)
