Greater Jakarta: City develops urban farming in subdistricts

T

he city administration has developed 66 modest urban farming spots located across various neighborhoods in an effort to make the city '€œgreener'€.

Fisheries, Agriculture and Food Security Agency head Darjamuni Taseda said that the 66 locations included those in Gandaria Selatan in South Jakarta, Slipi in West Jakarta and Kebon Bawang in North Jakarta. Darjamuni said that the agency was responsible for setting up the urban gardens and teaching residents how to take care of the plants.

'€œAfter we set up the plantations, residents will be responsible for taking care of them. Residents are free to take advantage of the vegetables we plant, as long as they maintain the farms,'€ Darjamuni said over the phone on Monday.

Thus far, he said, vegetables that had been planted included kale, mustard greens, collard greens, spinach and basil. These vegetables were planted using techniques such as mini wall gardening and the locally developed technique of vertiminaponik, which enables residents to harvest vegetables and fish.

'€œWe hope that these plantations will not only provide residents with affordable materials, but also develop their skills in gardening,'€ Darjamuni said, adding that the agency planned to develop similar such gardens in all of the city'€™s 267 subdistricts.
