oreign Minister Retno LP Marsudi said on Tuesday that she was seeking ways to free Indonesians from the obligation to obtain Schengen visas before entering European countries.
Retno said that she had sent the request to European Commission Vice President Frans Timmermans.
'I have conveyed all the data to Timmermans regarding the reasons why we are asking for free visas,' she said as quoted by tempo.co.
One of the reasons, she said, was that the Indonesian government had granted free visas for the majority of European countries. Of 45 countries on Indonesia's free-visa list, 15 are in Europe.
Retno also said that Timmermans had given a positive response to the request.
She said that she would follow up on the meeting with Timmermans with bilateral talks through Indonesian embassies in Europe as well as the embassies of European countries in Indonesia.
Despite the efforts, Retno refused to set a targeted time for the plan to materialize. (ika) (++++)
