While its plot and over-the-top computer-generated imagery (CGI) may make Ant-Man look like your average superhero movie, the film is so much more than that.

Michael Douglas and Paul Rudd shine in the tale of two fathers trying to set things right with their daughters while saving the world in Ant-Man, Marvel’s latest superhero flick.

Douglas plays Hank Pym, a scientist who discovers a particle and a suit that allows a man to shrink into the size of an ant without losing his man-size strength and prowess.

During the Cold War, Pym uses his invention, allowing him to become a miniature-sized super soldier codenamed Ant-Man, who fights evil to save the world from nuclear war.

But after losing his wife while on a mission together, Pym decides to hang up his Ant-Man suit.

Now a widower and in exile, Pym also finds himself somewhat estranged from his only daughter, Hope (Evangeline Lilly), who keeps wondering about what happened to her mother.

To keep himself busy, Pym founds a tech company and hires Daren Cross (Corey Stoll) as his protégé. Years later, Cross, whom Pym had already considered a son, betrays him.

Meanwhile, Scott Lang (Rudd) is an ex-convict experiencing trouble getting a job to pay child support so he can earn visitation rights to see his daughter Cassie (Abby Ryder Fortson).

In desperation, Lang, who has sworn to never commit burglary again, decides to give his old crime career one more shot. He partners up with his old friend Luis (played magnificently by Michael Peña), to rob an “old man’s safe”.

Pym and Lang cross paths during the burglary and fascinated by how Lang manages to pull off a clever burglary, Pym decides to take him in as his new protégé.

Pym’s decision, however, does not bode well with Hope, who believes she deserves to be the next Ant-Man (or the first Ant-Woman).

On paper, the film may have only recorded US$23.4 million on its opening day — not at the level of other, bigger-named costumed heroes like Captain America, Iron Man and Thor — but do not let the number fool you. Ant-Man deserves much more credit.

The dynamics between Pym and Hope, with lovable funny guy Lang stuck in between, is a central part of the movie and makes Ant-Man somewhat quirky. Its unique and humorous approach makes the movie one of the best superhero films in recent years.

All of the characters, even the villains like Cross, are losing some kind of battle that breaks them. Audiences are able to relate to the internal struggles of the characters.

Their stories are narrated through endless layers of highly amusing self-deprecating humor.

It is hard to believe that such a great and humorous movie like Ant-Man, now in theaters, was actually made in a chaotic situation that included a change of director and writers. But those changes may have helped the finished product as it will be fondly remembered as one of the most interesting and captivating superhero movies of all time.
