5.7 magnitude earthquake rocked the southern part of Java early on Saturday, creating brief panic among local residents.
However, the earthquake, which took place at 4:44 a.m., did not cause any casualties or significant damage, according to National Disaster mitigation Agency (BNPB) spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho
'The quake did not have the potential to trigger a tsunami,' said Sutopo as quoted by Antara news agency.
The quake epicenter, according to the BNPB, was located in the Indian Ocean, 115 kilometers southeast of Cilacap regency in Central Java, or 147 km southwest of Yogyakarta, at a depth of 10 kilometers.
Sutopo said the tremor from the quake, ranging from low to high intensity, could be felt by residents in several cities in West Java, Central Java, Yogyakarta and East Java.
'A strong tremor with shaking shocks was reportedly felt in Tasikmalaya, Cilacap, Purbalingga, Kebumen and Gunungkidul regencies for 10 to 15 seconds. Many people hurriedly left their houses shouting,' he said
Maryam, a resident of Adipala district in Cilacap, described the brief tremor as 'very strong'. 'I was about to do my morning prayers when suddenly the quake came. Plates and cups at the shelf were clattering during the tremor,' she said.
