ix people were killed and one survived in a landslide that hit homes in Silayang-layang subdistrict, Padang Sidempuan, North Sumatra, on Monday afternoon.
The six victims, mostly children aged between two months and five years old, were from two families whose houses were hit by the landslide.
Padang Sidempuan Military District chief Let. Col. Uyat Harahap said on Tuesday that the landslide was triggered by a heavy downpour.
A 12-year-old girl survived after she was buried for 11 hours in the landslide.
'Seven people were buried in the landslide. Six were found dead and one identified as Aisyah survived,' he said.
Uyat said Aisyah was found alive at 3:30 a.m. after a team of rescuers from the local administration worked to find the victims.
'It was a miracle when the rescuer workers found Aisyah alive after being buried for 11 hours,' he said, adding that she was found trapped under the rubble of one of the houses.
Padang Sidempuan Police chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Muhammad Helmi Lubis said the landslide was caused by heavy rains in the regency over the past few days.
