enior lawyer Otto Cornelis (OC) Kaligis on Tuesday again refused to fulfill a Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) summons for questioning as a witness in an alleged bribery case involving three judges and a registrar secretary of the State Administrative Court (PTUN) in Medan, North Sumatra.
In a letter delivered by Alamsyah Hanafiah, one of his lawyers, Kaligis said it would be better for him if the KPK just shot him.
'To the respected KPK commissioners, today I have again been pressured to attend a questioning for the purposes of an investigative report [BAP]. I reject it. It would be better if I were shot dead by the KPK,' said Kaligis.
He said the commission should have first examined him in a court session. 'The KPK should not name me as a suspect and subsequently summon me as a suspect. I refuse it. On 6:45 a.m. today, my blood pressure was 190/90,' said the lawyer in a hand-written letter.
It was the second time Kaligis has refused to attend a questioning. Last Friday, he rejected a KPK summons for questioning, saying that he was sick.
'His blood pressure was quite high,' said Alamsyah who spoke to journalists at the anti-graft body headquarters in Kuningan, South Jakarta.
'He [Kaligis] wishes to be immediately tried in court in regards to the recent claims of KPK investigators who said they have obtained two pieces of sufficient evidence. If the KPK has sufficient evidence, he requests to be immediately tried in court. That is all,' said Alamsyah.
Kaligis was scheduled to face questioning as a witness in a bribery case involving his staffer Moch.Yagari Bhastara Guntur aka Gerry.
Alamsyah said his client did not refuse to cooperate in KPK's investigation because of his current status as a suspect. 'As a suspect he has the right to reject a questioning for the purposes of an investigative report. It is also his right to refuse to be a witness against other suspects,' he said.
KPK has named six suspects in the case: PTUN Medan chief justice Tripeni Irianto Putro, two judge panel members Amir Fauzi and Dermawan Ginting, and the court's secretary Syamsir Yusfan who allegedly received bribe money. Kaligis and his staffer, Gerry, were named suspects for allegedly bribing the judges. (ebf)(+++)
