outh Jakarta District Court judge Sarpin Rizaldi, who delivered a controversial verdict in accepting former police chief hopeful Comr. Gen. Budi Gunawan's pretrial petition, stressed that he had no plan to retract his libel complaint against two leaders from the Judicial Commission (KY).
He said here on Tuesday that the statements made by KY leaders Suparman Marzuki and Taufiqurahman Syahuri to the media on his appointment to try the pretrial petition and his decision in the case were not only a serious attack on his personality, but also had made him heartsick because the two had surpassed their authority in making the statements.
'The task of the KY is to maintain the dignity of judges and not to attack them and not to comment on their decisions. Before trying the case, I was attacked and after making the decision, I was also condemned. Because I am a human being, I have to resist the attacks,' he said as quoted by kompas.com.
After receiving complaints from anticorruption and nongovernmental organizations regarding his decision on Budi Gunawan, the Judicial Commission recommended the Supreme Court suspend Sarpin for six months.
In accepting Budi's pretrial petition, Sarpin invalidated the Corruption Eradication Commission's move to name Budi a graft suspect for allegedly accepting a huge amount of funds in gratification from a businesswoman in addition to possessing a suspiciously fat bank account when he was chief of the police's Human Resources and Education Development Department from 2004 to 2006.
A few days after making comments to the media, Suparman and Taufiqurahman were taken into custody as suspects for libel. (rms)(++++)
