ome Minister Tjahjo Kumolo has said that he is apprehensive about an alleged graft case implicating North Sumatra Governor Gatot Pujo Nugroho.
'I, as the home minister, am very concerned about a case currently affecting the governor of North Sumatra. We have to put forward the presumption of innocence principle. Therefore, we have to wait first for more developments in the case,' he said as quoted by Antara on Wednesday. The minister made the comments in a statement distributed to journalists in Jakarta on Tuesday.
Based on Law No.23/2014 on regional administrations, Gatot is not allowed to carry out his duties as governor after being named a suspect and detained for his alleged involvement in a graft case.
Tjahjo said that he would temporarily dismiss Gatot from his position as governor once his case was registered in court.
'If his case has entered trial sessions in court, according to the rules and laws, he [Gatot] can be temporarily dismissed from his position as governor of North Sumatra so that he can focus on his trial sessions,' he said.
On Tuesday, the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) named Gatot and his second wife, Evi Susanti, suspects in an alleged bribery case involving the Medan State Administrative Court (PTUN) chief justice, two judges and the court's clerk.
Gatot and his wife were charged with Law No.31/1999 in reference to Law No.20/2001 on corruption and the Criminal Code (KUHP). If proven guilty of committing bribery, they could face a prison sentence of three years at a minimum or 15 years at maximum, and a fine of Rp 150 million (US$11,100) at a minimum or Rp 750 million at a maximum.
