em>Your comments on the issuance of a ministerial decree by Culture and Primary and Secondary Education Minister Anies Baswedan, underlining the importance of the ethical (budi pekerti) development/character building of students amid concerns over the lack of ethical comprehension among the nation'€™s youth:

Implementing ethical development demands a long process. The school must set the curriculum and program immediately and directly so that ethical behavior becomes a habit. In this way we will achieve our purpose.

What the minister said was just the tiniest fraction of what is happening concerning students and deprivation.

It seems that blaming the students has become his new art. He should think the other way around. It is the teachers to whom an ethical development program should be aimed.

Only thus can he secure moral salvation for the students.

When I first entered kindergarten at Saint Joseph school in Medan 68 years ago as a five-year-old boy, the very first lesson we received was related to ethics.

Minister Anies Baswedan, it'€™s still not too late to begin again a new education centered on ethics. We cannot blame the youth. They just follow their masters.

It'€™s the legislators who need character building and it will take more than 15 minutes of singing. It'€™s actually kind of repugnant that these people comment on other people'€™s character. They obviously have no shame.

I did hundreds of flag ceremonies in my early school life and believe me there is no direct correlation between a flag ceremony and character building.

If the minister'€™s team is serious about building character in students, it must start with building healthy schools.

This entails eradicating corruption in the education department (almost impossible based on the ICW opinion), promoting discipline in teachers (a long journey for some local schools), ensuring healthy nutrition inside schools and developing solidarity among students.

Nothing wrong with singing and reading practice, but if the students live in '€œbroken homes'€, all the
training will be useless. Character building always starts first from the family.

Greg Daru

Maybe start with character building lessons for government ministers. They can start with a flag raising ceremony in the morning, and then have eight hours of lessons. Basic religious education, law, public administration, a foreign language plus lessons according to their ministerial responsibilities.

It is another Minister acting and changing things with no checks or balances.

It is apparent that the powers given to ministers by current and past presidents have proven to be an obstacle in Indonesia'€™s advancement.

You can'€™t go forward with someone doing things because it is simply what they think.

A Minister'€™s job should be to inform and advise the President. Not to make policy. This needs to be addressed by the people. There hasn'€™t been much benefit for Indonesia with this practice. Mr. President, change this practice if you really want to see Indonesia go forward in a positive manor.
