n a bid to prevent clashes among ojek (motorcycle taxi) drivers, especially local drivers and those hired by booking companies like Go-Jek and Grab Bike, the Jakarta Police have deployed personnel to patrol ojek posts in the city.

Jakarta Police spokesperson Sr. Comr. Mohammad Iqbal said on Saturday that the police had been patrolling near ojek posts.

Iqbal said the step was part of the implementation of community policing in which preventive measure could be taken by police officers and members of society. '€œThe program makes residents '€˜police officers'€™ for their neighborhoods,'€ he said as quoted by kompas.com.

Go-Jek and Grab Bike ojek drivers have received threats from local drivers when picking up passengers, in particular in areas where they are considered to be poaching the patronage of local customers. Some have been assaulted. Go-Jek and Grab Bike systems offer more competitive prices than traditional ojek drivers.

He said the police had also explained the law to traditional ojek drivers. '€œAlthough you may be envious, you cannot violate the law,'€ he said.

Previously, Jakarta Police chief Insp. Gen. Tito Karnavian said traditional ojek drivers should not feel threatened by Go-Jek or Grab Bike drivers as their target markets were different.
