Rabies is on the rise again in Bali as the disease has already claimed 12 lives this year, a significant increase over last year's two fatalities and one victim in 2013.
The latest case was reported on Monday, with 24-year-old I Komang Kartawan was suspected to have died from rabies after a puppy bit a finger on his left hand last month. He died at Sanglah Hospital in Denpasar.
Your comments:
Bali needs to open a center for rabies with a stock of vaccines and specialized personnel for treatment. Dogs should not be allowed to roam freely.
And remember that monkeys, rats and bats could also be infected and dangerous. Even cats and cattle, but at least they do not bite. Cattle and cats biting people is rare.
What blood test is the head of Bali Health talking about? After a dog bites someone, the dog must be held for observation for 10 days; the virus can be in the saliva of infected dogs for 10 days before the appearance of rabies symptoms. If the dog doesn't show symptoms of rabies after 10 days, it means the dog is not infected. If the dog cannot be held for observation, the treatment period of the victim must be longer. There is no possible blood test. The virus is transmitted by the nervous system. In this case, if the victim was bitten on the hand, there is enough time for treatment.
The closer the bite is to the head, the faster the virus will spread to the central nervous system. How can the head of a health department make such a foolish remark!
