resident Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo highlighted on Tuesday the importance of technology in supporting the growth of small industry, such as agriculture and fisheries.
'Indeed, our traditional economy needs to make use of [digital] applications that will make things easier,' Jokowi said as quoted by kompas.com.
Speaking at a forum for creative communities, Jokowi referred to Go-Jek, a local digital application, which was developed to facilitate motorcycle taxi drivers reaching customers.
Jokowi said he hoped that the same thing could be applied to help other small business players.
For example, Jokowi imagined that digital apps could help fishermen to predict the weather and seasons before going to the sea.
'These are the kinds of apps that will boost small industry,' he said.
The government, he added, needed to give extra attention to creative industry, which formed the base of the technology and culture that he expected to be the future of this country.
Jokowi said the Information and Communication Ministry was preparing an e-commerce roadmap to develop technology-based creative industry in Indonesia. (ika)(+++)
